Those sexy, sexy bastard sons of Johnny Hastings are back on my blog again. I don't seem to be able to keep those swaggering bare-chested lunks off of the place.

(I don't really think they're swaggering or lunky by the way. I suspect the boys wouldn't take kindly to be described that way if they heard me. Especially if this post on Katherine Deane's blog is anything to go by. Seriously if you haven't read that yet, go and read it now. I'll wait. It is quite possibly the best thing on the whole internet. (Sorry about that, lolcats.) Katherine interviews all five sons of Johnny Hastings with inevitable consequences. First time I read it, I immediately went back and read it again. Then again. And then I had to have a bit of a lie down.)

Today's son of Johnny Hastings is Matt Caine, the hero of Mary Wehr's To Have and To Scold. This was the first of the Johnny Hastings boxset I read and it is absolutely delightful. The heroine, Maggie has been sweet on her neighbour, Matt since she was young but he has always considered her something of an annoying brat. Which she was, to be fair. But once she's all grown-up and in trouble then Matt is just the very man to come to her rescue. And the first thing he needs to do in order to free her from her wicked stepmother's plans is to make an honest woman of her...

Matt rapped on the door and a short, rotund woman answered the knock. She stared at him wide-eyed and pulled her wrapper tighter around her thick waist. 

"Tell the Preacher Matt Caine's here to see him." She hesitated and he fixed his face into what he hoped was a no nonsense glare. Frightening the woman out of her wits had not been his intention, but it certainly made her move faster. 

The door closed sharply and Annie giggled. "I think you scared her." 

Matt bent his head, his expression unyielding. "She's not the one who has reason to be afraid," he remarked sternly. "You're the one who has a spanking coming and I haven't forgotten." He arched a brow in question. "Do you still want me as your husband knowing what's going to happen? Be sure, Annie, because once you got my name, there'll be no turning back. This marriage is for keeps. No divorce, no annulment. I promise to love you and take care of you, but I also intend to run my household with a firm hand." He must be addle-headed. Why was he deliberately trying to scare her? She already said yes to his proposal. Cripes, what if she changed her mind? He'd be lost. 

Annie appeared puzzled. "But I'll be your wife. Men don't spank their wives, do they?"
It was time he enlightened Annie on the ways of the world.

Synopsis:

Annie’s sweet on her neighbor, Matthew Caine, but the stern rancher treats her like a bratty child instead of a woman. Each encounter always ends with a trip over his knee.

Matthew’s fed up with Annie’s childish behavior. Her latest prank ruined a brand new pair of boots! While he sets her britches on fire, he refers to her as a nuisance and warns her to leave him alone. For once in her life, Annie obeys.

 ‘Bratty’ Annie has grown into a beautiful woman and Matthew realizes that he’s fallen in love with her, but she’s unsure of his feelings. When he learns about her stepmother’s evil plan to marry her off to a man Annie despises in order to settle a debt, he steps in and takes her to wife.

Annie’s happy to be married to the man of her dreams and learns that no matter what her age, her disobedience and sass will be dealt with an old-fashioned spanking.
